Points to Note if you Plan to Take Part in Optimist Essay Contest
Optimist Essay Contest is held annually by the Optimist International Club in three levels, namely club, district, and International. International winner will receive US$ 6,000 college scholarships and a plaque while second and third place winners will receive a plaque and US$ 3,750 and US$ 2,250 scholarships respectively. District level winners will win US$ 2,500 and a plaque while club winners will win a medallion. Every year International club issues the topic for the essay for that year. Students are required to forward an essay written on the given topic, adhering to the essay rules.
General Rules for the Essay Contest
Students who are under age of 19 years as of December 31, 2010 can enter the Optimist Essay Contest this year. Applications and the essays written on the given topic shall be sent to the local Optimist Club of the student’s residence area. The essays and applications will be accepted until mid February. But students shall check for the exact closing dates from local Optimist Clubs. The winning essays of the clubs are entered into the district contest and will be sent to the district organization. Winning scholarship essay of each district will be awarded the district prize of US$ 2,500 and the plaque. They are automatically entered to the Optimist International Essay Contest.
Topics for the Essay and Rules for Writing the Essay
Every Year new topics are given for the contest essay. Topic for the 2010-2011 Optimist Essay Contest is “How My Education is the Key to a Successful Future”. The essay must be 400 to 500 words long and double-spaced. A title page that contains the official topic, number of words, writer’s name, address, phone number, name of the school and date of birth is an essential requirement. Official topic and number of words shall be given at the top of first page. Every page, excluding the title page shall be numbered with numbers centered at the bottom. A writing style such as MLA format is recommended to be used and reference sources must be cited as per the correct format. Non-compliance with this rule leads to disqualification. Language of the essay can be English, French, Spanish or the official language of the country where the sponsoring Club is located. The essay and the application must be stapled together in the upper left-hand corner.
